The Roundup: Week of July 3rd, 2009
3 07 2009Welcome back everyone. It’s Independence Day weekend, and time for another edition of “The Roundup”!

This week I’m talking about Firefox 3.5, a new social network to keep track of your “gdgt”s, and Steve Jobs returning to Apple. Take a look, after the jump.
This week I have three stories for you. Let’s get started.

Firefox 3.5 downloaded 5 million times in first 24 hours
Thursday, July 2, 2009

Mozilla, the makers of the super popular, open source browser, Firefox; have finally released a new version. With new features like HTML 5 video streaming, faster java script processing, and (finally) a “private browsing” mode, it has already received over 5 million downloads in the first 24 hours of its release. This is just a bit less than the Firefox 3.0 launch downloads, which had 8 million downloads in 24 hours. Honestly, if your still using Internet Explorer (which, seeing as this is a Apple Tech blog, is probably low) go get Firefox 3.5 now (or another fine browser such as Safari, Opera, or Chrome). And, congratulations to the Firefox team for another successful launch.

Peter Rojas and Ryan Block launch gdgt — the Swiss Army knife of tech sites
Wednesday, July 1, 2009

Ryan Block and Peter Rojas have finally launched their “new” project, gdgt (pronounced “gadget”) which is a combination of a social network, wiki, and gadget database. gdgt has been “live” for some time now, but just as a weekly podcast and occasional live coverage of tech events. gdgt allows you to add your gadgets to a have list, want list, or had list, so that you can track news and reviews of your gadgets. Think of this as instead of getting a first look review from a tech blog or shopping site, you get a long term “I’ve used this for a couple months, and here’s what I think” review. Go check it out, and add me as your “friend”.

Jobs Returns to Work as Apple CEO After Medical Leave
Monday, June 29, 2009

Steve Jobs has somewhat quietly returned to work at Apple. Apple has acknowledged his return but only with a simple stamen from a spokesman “Steve is back to work, We are very glad to have him back”. Right now, his is only on the apple campus a few days a week, and working from home the rest of the time. We at The iLife only wish Steve the best in returning to work. If you’re still interested in Steve Jobs, check out Geoff Kaicher’s article “The Beginning of a New Era, or the End of a Dynasty?”
That’s it for this week, Have a great 4th of July weekend! And I’ll see you next time, right here at The iLife.
