12 06 2009Welcome back everyone, to another edition of “The Roundup”!

This week I’m talking about the new iPhone, Custom Facebook URL’s, Palm Pre’ making records, and the DTV transition for the last time. Take a look, after the jump.
This week I have three stories for you. Let’s get started.

Say Hello To The iPhone 3G S — “S” Is For Speed
Monday, June 8, 2009

Well, the WWDC keynote was Monday. Apple released a slew of new stuff, including new 13″, 15″ and 17″ MacBook Pros. But the most rumored item had to be the new iPhone, and it has most of the “realistic” features that were rumored about, including a auto focus camera that can take video, a compass, voice commands, and a few other things. Dubbed the iPhone 3GS (for speed!), it will also have a faster processor, but in the exact same form factor as the iPhone 3G. The iPhone 3GS will go on sale in the U.S. on June 19th at 8AM in every time zone. It will retail for $199 for 16 GB and $299 for 32GB. Oh, and if you currently have an iPhone and are in the middle for a contract, you will have to pay a pro-rated unsubsidized price. Have fun with that! As usually, I’m passing on the iPhone. But as soon as Apple releases a new iPod Touch, I’m upgrading.

Coming Soon: Facebook Usernames
Tuesday, June 9, 2009

Facebook is getting a little bit more like myspace. That is, starting midnight EDT on Saturday, you will be able to register for a username, this way people can find you easier. For example, instead of http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1335330083 , you could just use http://www.facebook.com/KeithHobin (Mine!!!). Each Facebook account will be able to register one, and only one username for each profile (and only if you have register after May 31st, to prevent squatting). I can only hope that facebook’s servers can cope with thousands of people trying to preform the same action, all at the same time. I’m staying up Friday night, are you?

Sprint breaks its sales record with Palm Pre
Monday, June 8, 2009

Congratulations Pre! You made it! And with a bang too… Sprint announced that the Pre broke sales records, and that the launch exceed Sprint’s expectations, but they won’t say exactly by how much the Pre broke Sprint’s record. There were short lines to get the phone (nothing like the iPhone launches), and Sprint is still estimating that their might be spot shortages. Overall, good job Palm and Sprint. Now, all I have to do is find the money to buy one (at unsubsidised pricing, since I can’t renew my contract).
Quick Note: Just want to remind everyone that the DTV transition officially happens… today. You a) probably didn’t even notice or b) we already prepared in some capacity.
Also, I’m taking a break from writing The Roundup for two weeks, but that doesn’t mean The Roundup won’t go on! Sam Epstein and Geoff Kaicher will be filling in for me on the weeks of the 19th and 26th, respectively.
That’s it for this week, see you in two weeks, right here at The iLife.
