The Roundup: Week of June 19th, 2009
19 06 2009Hey, I’m Sam, Keith asked me to take over for him for this week’s edition of “The Roundup”! Plus, I’m coming to you live from the 5th Ave Apple store in New York City.

This week I’m talking about the iPhone 3GS launch and The iLife crew camping out, Opera’s “crazy idea” for reinventing the web, and a new version of TweetDeck (along with a shiny new version for the iPhone). Take a look, after the jump.
This week I have three stories for you. Let’s get started.

They’re here: iPhone OS 3.0 and iPhone 3GS
Thursday, June 18, 2009

By the time your reading this, The iPhone 3GS has been out for… at least 5 hours on the east coast, and iPhone OS 3.0 has been out forover 48 hours. But you know what, that still means that this is the week that they finally arrived! Just two weeks after it’s official announcement the 3GS has reached the hands of consumers, and in The iLife’s case, our own Sidney San Martin. The combo of the new 3GS hardware and software now bring tons of new features like better battery life, that can run a faster processor for more complicated apps in the app store, or the new auto-focus camera with video capabilities. Or even the new native voice activation. So, be sure to check out all of our iPhone 3GS coverage, right here at The iLife.

Thoughts on Opera Unite
Tuesday, June 16, 2009

Opera has a whole new idea of how you should share information with your friends. It’s called Opera Unite, and it basically involves running a small webserver in your browser, allowing you to easily share photos, videos, and other information. The catch is, in order to make the sharing easy, all of the data is routed through Opera’s servers before arriving at its final destination. Opera says that the advantage to this is that “you own your data” since it will always live on your computer. If you want to get every last little detail about how this could affect you and your privacy, check out Chris Messina’s blog post (the linked article). He breaks it down and analyzes it much better than I could do here. Overall, I think that it’s an interesting concept, and I plan on giving it a try soon. TweetDeck Comes to the iPhone: Impressive, Unstable
Wednesday, June 17, 2009

TweetDeck, One of the most popular Twitter clients has released a new version of their desktop client, along with a new iPhone app, which syncs with the desktop app. Honestly, the iPhone app seems like a rip off of the Palm Pre’s multi-tasking, and its “growl” notifications of new tweets is hoopty. However, Keith, our resident twitter-holic says its a much better app than Tweetie or Twitterfon, even if TweetDeck crashes ocationally. The iPhone app allows you to do almost everything the desktop client does, including having “groups” to organize your friends. Both TweetDeck for Desktop and iPhone are free and available at TweetDeck.com
That’s it for this week, check back every Friday at noon for a new edition of “The Roundup”.
