theilife roundup 300x212 The Roundup: Week of May 29th, 2009

This week I’m talking about Google’s latest product release, The new Microsoft Zune, a Hackintosh maker going bankrupt, and a reminder about Windows Vista SP2. Take a look, after the jump.

This week I have three stories for you. Let’s get started.

Google is launching a new product, called Google Wave. It’s not available publicly yet, but judging from the demo video from the Google I/O conference, it looks really cool. The idea behind wave is that it would be what email be if it was invented today. Wave will allow live interactivity while editing a document (in real time) and using other rich media. Think of it as Google Docs on steroids, but mixed in with email and instant messaging. The demo video might be long (about an hour and 20 minutes), but it’s definitely worth watching. Like email, Google Wave will be able to interact in real time with other Wave servers. There is also an extensive set of API’s, and the possibilities are limitless for what developers can create and expand on the functionality of Wave. I can’t wait for Google Wave to come out to the public; it’s going to make working on group projects, and sharing information with a group so much easier.

zune hd 300x171 The Roundup: Week of May 29th, 2009

Microsoft has officially announced the much rumored Zune HD. It will be released sometime this fall, and it will feature a OLED touch screen, HD Radio support (an upgrade from standard FM), HD output (with a separate dock), and an IE based web browser using Wi-Fi (which of course, has been in all the Zune products from the start). Microsoft has not yet released any details like storage capacity, CPU, or battery life. Most likely this will be announced at E3 this upcoming week (June 2nd -4th), and they may also announce details about integration with Xbox LIVE. Stay tuned, we’ll have more details in the upcoming week.

Psystar Files Bankruptcy, Stalls Apple’s Case

Tuesday, May 26, 2009

psystar logo The Roundup: Week of May 29th, 2009

You should remember Psystar, the company that will sell you a hackintosh. Well, recently Apple has filed a legal case against them. That is going to be put on hold for a while, since Psystar filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection (which also means all legal actions involving the Psystar are put on hold while the bankruptcy proceedings are sorted out). Also, this means that Psystar’s finanacers will be revealed during the court proceeding on June 5th. So, for now the only way to easily get a hackintosh is to hack it yourself.

Quick Note:

I just wanted to let everyone know that Vista SP2 has been released. The only way to get it for now, is to download it directly from the Microsoft website. You can find download links at the Microsoft Technet article. It will hit Windows Update around June 30th. The update will bring better Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, processor compatibility, native Blu-Ray support, and faster search to Windows Vista.

That’s it for this week, see you next time, right here at The iLife.
