Welcome back everyone, to another edition of “The Roundup”!

theilife roundup 300x212 The Roundup: Week of May 15th, 2009

This week I’m talking about Google having issues staying up, Craigslist finally doing something about their erotic services section, and Intel being fined for anti-competitive practices. Take a look, after the jump.

This week I have three stories for you. Let’s get started.

google The Roundup: Week of May 15th, 2009

Google pulled a “Fail Whale” on Thursday. A bunch of Google services such as search, Gmail, Docs, and News. The outage lasted for about an hour. Google put up a blog post saying that the problem was that a system failed and redirect a lot of Google traffic to Asia. Google claimed in their blog post that only 14% of Google users were affected by the outage. This isn’t the only issue Google had with their services this week, as Gmail also went down. Random reactions from people on the internet: Googling why Google is down, Tweeting about it (#googlefail), and saying “It’s only Beta!”

Craigslist to remove erotic services section, monitor adult services posts

Craigslist has finally agreed to remove the “erotic services” section. This section has come under much scrutiny for enabling prostitution, and also the Craigslist Killer. It will not go away completely; instead there will be an adult services section, which will be policed by Craigslist employees and cost $10 to post, twice as much as the fees for the erotic services section (which were donated to charity). This is a big change up since Craigslist has been going on about how they were not going to remove the section, but the real question is how are they going to be able to police the new adult section? Craigslist is a really small company, they only have 28 employees. Will they outsource the policing to another company? One thing is for sure, I won’t be checking out either of these sections anytime soon.

EU slaps a record fine on Intel

intel logo 300x198 The Roundup: Week of May 15th, 2009

Intel is going to be fined €1.06 Billion ($1.45 Billion) by the European Union for anti-competitive practices. Intel is accused of giving rebates and cash payments to manufactures if they only used Intel chips, among other things, such as paying for delaying the release of products that contained AMD chips. Intel has denied the charges and are planning on appealing the verdict. This is the largest fine that the EU has imposed for anti-competitive practices. It’s even large that the €295 Million that was levied on Microsoft for abusing their dominant market position. Anybody expected this from Intel, because I sure as hell didn’t.

That’s it for this week, see you next time, right here at The iLife.
