This week I’m talking about Google and Apple’s FTC inquiry, Amazon’s new Kindle, AT&T’s first iPhone app, and some quick notes on Windows 7 RC, and Mac OS X 10.5.7. Take a look, after the jump.
This week I have three main stories for you. Let’s get started.

Board Ties at Apple and Google Are Scrutinized
Monday, May 4, 2009

Apple and Google share two members on their respective board of directors, Eric Schmidt, chief executive of Google, and Arthur Levinson, former chief executive of Genentech. Since Apple and Google are both competitors in the cellphone market, the FTC decided that maybe there just too close, and has launched an inquiry. Why someone didn’t think of this earlier? Who the hell knows. Stay tuned, because this is one of those stories that’s going to just keep popping up.

Amazon’s big-screen Kindle DX makes its debut
Wednesday, May 6, 2009

Amazon has announced the new big screen Kindle, and they are calling it the Kindle DX (no clue what the DX stands for). The plan is to target it to periodicals and textbooks. This Kindle will have a 9.7 inch screen (as opposed to 6 inches), and have a few more features like supporting PDF’s natively (no conversion needed), and have an accelerometer so the screen automatically rotates (like an iPhone). It also has slightly more storage and battery life. The big kicker is the price. $489. Like the Kindle 2 wasn’t expensive enough. The Kindle DX will be released this summer, and is available for pre-order on amazon.com now.

AT&T Finally Releases What Should Have Been The First iPhone App
Tuesday, May 5, 2009

AT&T has released an iPhone app. The really surprising thing is, why didn’t AT&T release an app when the first iPhone came out? It will allow users to view and pay their wireless bills from the iPhone. They can also see their current usage and add or remove features from their plan. The sad part is that this is not the first app to do this. I’ll I have to say is that it’s about time.
And a few quick notes:
Windows 7 RC was released on Tuesday, and as previously reported; the RC will work for a full year (until June). What wasn’t previously announced is that starting in March; the RC will shut down every two hours. Oh, and after June, you can still boot into the RC, but you will have the “non-genuine” experience. That basically means lots of nagging about how you need to get a “genuine copy of windows” and no background.
Also, Mac Life has reported that Mac OS X 10.5.7 could be released today. There is speculation that this will be the final update to Leopard before Snow Leopard’s release. Apple is expected to release, or announce a release date, of Snow Leopard at WWDC at the beginning of June.
That’s it for this week, see you next time, right here at The iLife.
