iPhone OS 3.0 is coming, preview on March 17th
Thursday, March 12, 2009

Apple has announced that they will be holding a press event this up coming Tuesday (March 17) at 10 AM PDT (1PM EDT). The event will be geared towards the new iPhone SDK and will give the media a “sneak peek” at the iPhone OS 3.0 software. Who knows what features they will release? the rumors are flying and include the usual list like copy and paste, MMS, Bluetooth stereo support (A2DP), and tethering. The iLife staff will of course be keeping a close eye on the event, but will not be attending due to the fact that its all the way on the west coast.

Here comes Google Voice
And: Tech Crunch (GrandCentral To (Finally) Launch As Google Voice. It’s Very, Very Good.)
Wednesday, March 11, 2009

Google is finally doing some thing with Grand Central! Since Google acquired the company in 2007, the product has laid pretty dormant, except for integrating Google accounts into the system. However, now its being transformed into a new product called Google Voice. It will have some new features besides the whole “One Phone Number” thing including, SMS forwarding, and automatic voicemail transcription. Personally, I have had a Grand Central account since it first came out, and one of the main reasons I didn’t give the number out that much was because I would still have to give out my cell number so people could text me. Now that there is text forwarding, I will definitely get more use out of it. Just have to figure out how to make my texts appear as they are coming from my Google voice number. I am however still waiting for my account to be upgraded, but will report back when it has.

Early iPhone prototype up for auction
Monday, March 9, 2009

Two early prototypes of the iPhone (one working, one not working) was up for sale on eBay. And I say “was” because at the time of writing this article, the auction has “has been removed or is no longer available”, and according to the auction owner, it was pulled by Apple, as was the youtube video with a demo of the iPhone. Luckily engadget is he hosting the video so you can still check it out here. So, check out a piece of tech history, before Apple pulls it again. Oh, and the seller sold the iPhone’s to a privet buyer after the auction got pulled, just FYI.

Apple Announces Incredible New iPod shuffle
Wednesday, March 11, 2009

As you should all know, Apple released a new iPod shuffle this week. You can check out full iLife coverage from Dan here. Personally, I have always disliked the shuffle due to its lack of a screen. No I can hate this one due to its lack of screen and lack of buttons. Now, no buttons isn’t always a bad thing, especial in the case of the iPod Touch or iPhone, but here its stupid, because you are forced to you the uncomfortable, cheap, iPod headphones with remote, and memorise a bunch of button press combos in order to control the thing. Check out Dan’s article for more details. The new shuffle comes in grey and black, with 4 GB of memory for $79. It’s about the size of a stick of gum and has a new “VoiceOver” feature that reads you the song title and menu options, and sounds about as good and the Kindle 2’s text to speech voice. But hey, apple has to make money somehow. The good news? 1 GB Gen 2 shuffles are still on sale for $50, and it has buttons! Oh, and I must mention Harry McCracken of Technologizer’s idea for a shuffle case… the iPez! Go take a look!
That’s it for this week, check back next Friday for another edition of The Roundup.
