google The Roundup: Week of February 6th 2009

This weekend, Google somehow managed to make every site you could Google for as a potentially harmful website, and if you wanted to visit a sight, you first had to go through a nag screen advising you to go to a different website. The issue lasted approximately 40 minutes. It was supposedly caused by entering a “/” into the list of bad websites, which is a wild card and expands to all websites. FOverall, this was just a minor annoyence, but it does rase the question, is it ok to trust all of our online search life to one provider?

vista 7 1 300x300 The Roundup: Week of February 6th 2009

Microsoft has announced that there will be 7 different version of Windows 7, however only 5 will be available in the US. The 7 versions are: Windows 7 Starter, Windows 7 Home Basic, Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Enterprise and Windows 7 Ultimate. Both Starter (which will only be able to run 3 apps at once) and Home Basic will only be available in select, emerging markets. Enterprise will only be available to volume license customers. Ultimate will also be available to select customers. So, if you were to walk into a big box electronics store, you would only find Home Premium and Professional. Oh, and by the way, Microsoft says that the only reason its called “Home Premium” is because market research showed that people upgrading from Vista Home Premium to a 7 Home, felt like they were being gypped and not as much of an upgrade.

google earth logo apr08 300x212 The Roundup: Week of February 6th 2009

Google Earth 5 was released this week with new features such as historic satellite imaging, ocean floor mapping, and mars mapping. You can actually drop below the water in the ocean and explore the floor as well as famous ship wrecks and coral reefs. You can also record narrations synced with google earth locatins and send them to friends and family. To find out more check out Google’s Lat Long blog. The new version looks great and I can’t wait to see what else google comes up with.

That’s it for this week! See you in seven days, right here at The iLife.
